What is Acupuncture and what does it treat?

Acupuncture is the insertion of sterile, single use needles into acupuncture points to achieve a therapeutic response. It has been used for thousands of years, originating in China. It is one of the 8 Branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine. According to the World Health Organization, acupuncture can be suitable for the following disorders:

Ear, Nose, and Throat Disorders - Toothaches, pain after tooth extraction, ear-aches, sinus inflammation, nasal inflammation or dryness. Respiratory Disorders - Uncomplicated bronchial asthma in children or adults. Gastrointestinal Disorders - Digestive tract problems, hiccups, inflammation of the stomach, chronic duodenal ulcers, inflammation of the colon, constipation, diarrhea, dysentery caused by certain bacteria. Eye Disorders - Inflammation of the conjunctiva, inflammation of the central retina, nearsightedness (in children), and uncomplicated cataracts. Nervous System and Muscular Disorders - Headaches, migraines, certain facial paralysis or nerve pain, partial weakness after a stroke, inflammation of nerve endings, bed wetting, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, sciatica, low back pain, and osteoarthritis.

How do I prepare for my visit?

Wear clothes that are loose fitting and can be rolled up past your knees and elbows, avoid one piece styles (i.e. dresses), eat a small meal within 2 hours of your appointment, and maintain good personal hygiene. Drink plenty of water before and after your appointment.

Does it hurt?

For the most part acupuncture is painless. Some points sting slightly upon insertion, which dissipates quickly once the proper depth has been reached. Sometimes after treatment pain, or other symptoms, will temporarily increase before getting better, this is known as a healing crisis. However, most people have immediate partial or full relief.

How many treatments will I need?

The quantity of treatments is different for every person and every complaint. In general, the longer something has ailed you the longer it will take to treat. Everyone responds to acupuncture differently.
